Hugh Skinner
Hugh Skinner plans to speak on martagon lily development in Canada. Hugh began to develop his interest in gardening at his father’s knee. He spent summers as a child playing in his father’s nursery. He lost his father’s mentorship at 16 years of age but studied horticulture at the University of Manitoba and graduated with a bachelor of science and arts degree in it in 1972. Since then, he has been involved in the nursery business. He grew a wide variety of trees, shrubs and perennial flowers.
Hugh's interest in growing lilies, especially martagons, was strongly stimulated when he began visiting with Barrie Strohman in the 1990s. He now grows lily bulbs, mostly martagons. He currently grows approximately 100 named martagon hybrids and about 25 selections from his breeding.
