This act was intended to preserve rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is located in northwest Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota and is comprised of the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers. It is one of a group of eight rivers in the country which first received this recognition.
